Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) is a prestigious university located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is established by Government of Maharashtra in 2014 to promote quality legal education. The chancellor of MNLU is hon’ble Chief Justice of India Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud. MNLU holds recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bar Council of India (BCI), further enhancing its credibility and standing in the field of legal education.
The Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai, often known as MNLU, has all the amenities that legal students want for studying and relaxation. Hostel amenities are available and it offers both male and female dorms that are completely equipped. Other major amenities include a water cooler, fan, WIFI, lighting, etc., are usually provided in hostels. CCTV cameras and security personnel are on duty 24/7 for the student’s protection. There is a Moot Court Hall for common extracurricular in law schools. It aids students in problem analysis, the study of pertinent legal issues, the preparation of submissions, and the oral presentation of arguments. It also has Center for Meditation and Cell for Internships.
The primary objective is to advance and disseminate learning, knowledge of law and legal processes; to develop in the students a sense of responsibility to serve the society and to impart skills on advocacy and justice, legal services, legislation and law reforms, thereby making law and legal processes efficient instrument of social development.
The university programmes are being designed to maximize legal outreach and market potential of global economy in general and of Mumbai in particular. The five year integrated B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) and B.B. A.,LL.B.(Hons.) Programme offered by the University is designed in accordance with the approved norms of the Bar Council of India, integrating at the same time innovative course modules evolved by the faculty which embraces the best practices of premier centers of legal education. Total 100 seats are offered and 22 supernumerary seats offered for B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) and B.B. A.,LL.B.(Hons.) Programme.
The University offers five years integrated undergraduate B.A. LL.B (Hons.) & B.B.A LL.B (Hons.) degree programs and one year Master of Laws (LL.M) program. The University also offers research programs Ph.D., D. Phil. and LL.D. These courses are based on a credits system with additional seminar courses for further learning, pursuant according to the interests of the students. The B.A. LL.B (Hons.) & B.B.A LL.B (Hons.) programs consist of approximately sixty subjects to be studied over the duration of ten semesters, with five subjects in each semester.
There are special scholarship facilities for students belonging to reserved category of Maharashtra state to avail the scholarship offered by the Department of Social Justice & Assistance, Government of Maharashtra. The University facilitates scholarship for students domiciled in other states in accordance with Central/State government rules and policies.
The Internship Cell of Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai is quite active in offering various internships possibilities which include working with Senior Advocates of The Supreme Court of India and The High Court of Bombay, also clerkship training under Judges on the High Court.
The University has entered into a number of MoUs with national and international institutes. Internationally, the University has ties with L’Universite’ Paris Nanterre, Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL), Germany, American University, Washington DC and others. Among, its collaborations with government agencies, the prominent ones are National Institute of Securities Management (NISM – a unit of SEBI), International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM – a unit of Election Commission of India), Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Intellectual Property Management (RGNIIPM – a unit of Govt. of India), Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and many more, thereby facilitating regular programmes with these prestigious institutions. These offers chances for students exchange programs.
The University boasts its research output via a dedicated Department of Research and 13 research centres including Centre for Research in Air and Space Law (CRASL), Centre for Research in Criminal Justice (CRCJ), Centre for Arbitration and Research (CAR), Centre for Information Communication Technology and Law (CICTL), Centre for Advanced Training in Taxation Laws (CATTL), Centre for Mediation and Research (CMR), Centre for Training & Research in Commercial Regulations (CTRCR), Centre for Research in Intellectual Property (CRIP), Centre for Women, Law and Gender Justice (CWLGC), Centre for Insolvency and Financial Laws (CIFL), Centre for Clinical Legal Education (CCLE), Centre for Advanced Legal Studies, Training & Research (CALSTR). The University has been given two sponsored research Chairs; one is Justice M. L. Pendse Chair in Environmental Laws and other is Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) IPR Chair.
With respect to tuition fees, for students domiciled in Maharashtra, the University provides 25 percent concession in the tuition fees subject to fulfillment of requisite conditions. Domicile Certificate issued by the Government of Maharashtra must be submitted at the time of Admission to avail this benefit.
MNLU Mumbai Law ranking by IIRF is 17 out of 39 colleges in India in 2023 and it was 12 out of 36 colleges in India in 2022.
