GNLU was formed in the year 2003 by the efforts of the then Solicitor General of India, Kirit Raval, the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Bar Council of India. The University is based on the structure of National Law School of India University. GNLU was the seventh National Law University to be set up in the country. It was established with the active support of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the judicial fraternity. V.S. Mani was the first Director.

The library has a vast collection of more than 35,000 volume of books, law reports and has subscription of 150 current journals, newspaper, reference books and e-books. It has huge resources in the field of law and other allied subjects such as Management, Sociology, Science & Technology, History, Economics, and English Literature. GNLU offers a platform for activities like mooting, article-writing, writing research papers and presenting them at conferences and client-counseling. Of these, mooting is the one that gains maximum prominence, and in fact to a much greater extent than all others. It would not be an understatement to say that in GNLU, mooting is religion. There is a Moot Court Committee, members of which are selected via an interview in which four students per batch are selected. It conducts two rounds of intra-University moot court competitions every semester. On the basis of the performance of the students in the second round and their preferences, they are sent for various national and international moot court competitions.
